For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6
In this post, we are going to briefly look at the Seven Compound Names of Jehovah and Their Perfect Fulfilment in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Seven hundred years before that silent night in Bethlehem, the prophet Isaiah looked straight through the incarnation and declared that every compound name by which Jehovah had revealed Himself to Israel would one day belong personally to a Child who would be born and a Son who would be given.
Here are the seven great compound names of Jehovah in the Old Testament—followed immediately by their New-Testament, blood-bought fulfilment in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Jehovah-Tsidkenu – “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper… this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” – Jeremiah 23:5-6
→ New Testament realization in Romans 4:5–6 “But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works.” - Jehovah-Shammah – “THE LORD IS THERE”
“…and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.” – Ezekiel 48:35
→ New Testament realization in Hebrews 13:5 “…for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” - Jehovah-Nissi – “THE LORD MY BANNER”
“And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it JEHOVAH-NISSI.” – Exodus 17:15
→ New Testament realization in John 12:32 “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” - Jehovah-Shalom – “THE LORD OUR PEACE”
“Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom.” – Judges 6:24
→ New Testament realization in Philippians 4:6 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” - Jehovah-Raah (Rohi) – “THE LORD MY SHEPHERD”
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” – Psalm 23:1
→ New Testament realization in 1 Peter 2:25 “For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.” - Jehovah-Rapha – “THE LORD THAT HEALETH THEE”
“…for I am the LORD that healeth thee.” – Exodus 15:26
→ New Testament realization in 1 Peter 2:24 “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree… by whose stripes ye were healed.” - Jehovah-Jireh – “THE LORD WILL PROVIDE”
“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.” – Genesis 22:!4
→ New Testament realization in Philippians 4:19 & Romans 8:28 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus… And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…”
When Isaiah said “His name shall be called Wonderful,” he was not giving the baby a nice adjective. He was declaring that the Angel of the LORD who once told Manoah, “Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret [Wonderful]?” (Judg. 13:18) had now taken flesh and would forever wear every name by which Jehovah had made Himself known.
- The Counsellor who is “wonderful in counsel” (Isa. 28:29) now indwells us by the Comforter.
- The mighty God (Isa. 10:21) lay in a manger.
- The Father of eternity (Isa. 57:15) became the babe of time.
- The Prince of Peace is none other than Jehovah-Shalom in person (Eph. 2:14).
This December, let the world keep its sentimental seasonal feelings. We have something infinitely better: a Saviour who is literally everything Jehovah ever claimed to be—our righteousness, our ever-present God, our banner, our peace, our shepherd, our healer, and our provider.
May every heart bow and confess with Thomas, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28).
Because He who was born in Bethlehem is the great I AM.
